26 of the 67 allotted seats are already taken and 10 more will go when the Super Qualifier starts at 4:46 ET on Friday as players try to qualify for just $35 instead of paying the $175 entry fee.

Payouts are cited in the picture below.

Preakness Prizes

Playing a horse racing contest is a fun way to enjoy the action and follow along with the great stakes action at Pimlico that features the following races!

Grade 1 Preakness Stakes (Orb, Goldencents, Mylute)

Grade 2 Dixie Stakes (Willcox Inn, Optimizer, Doubles Partner)

Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Handicap (Handsome Mike, Poseidon’s Warrior)

Chick Lang Stakes (Zee Bros)

The eyes of the horse racing world will focus on Pimlico to watch as Shug McGaughey’s Orb attempts to continue on his Triple Crown quest by adding the Preakness Stakes to a collection that already includes the Kentucky Derby.

His challenge is not an easy one as he will break from the rail and likely require racing luck to get the job done. To win the Triple Crown, Orb will have to prove he is Triple Crown caliber.

The $10,000 Preakness Game isn’t the only fun to be had at DerbyWars on Saturday. Players also have the option to try their luck in a $1,000 Preakness Stakes Survivor that costs only $9 to play and returns $750 to the winner! Survivor Games are great fun as you do not have to pick winners, but only horses that will hit the board. Finish first, second or third and advance; fail to do that once and you are eliminated from the contest.

These two games are in addition to the many wonderful daily contests DerbyWars hosts, like Head 2 Head games ranging from $20 to $2,000.

Kentucky Derby 139 left many DerbyWars horse racing contest players smiling ear to ear and their pockets lined with cash.

This weekend had it all. Head 2 Head games from $20 to $2,000, big survivor tournaments and even bigger cash games. There was literally something for everyone and every type of budget; big or small.

On a day where the track had more water on it than the Atlantic Ocean, winners seemed hard to find at times; but that did not deter player “Mferrozo”, a DerbyWars member since 2011.

Mferrozo ($101.00) took home the top prize of $5,000 in our $10,000 Derby Day Game after scoring several solid price horses. He beat the favored Code West with Bellarmine ($25.20) in the first race of the contest and then scored Berlino Di Tiger ($24.40) in the second race. They would account for nearly 70% of his score at the end of the day. He sealed the deal with Bull Dozer ($10.20) and Lifes Reward ($4.40) in the final two races.

Tracksidejive ($89.00) also put in a stellar effort. He cashed on Bellarmine and Berlino Di Tiger as well as Aubby K ($14.60) and Wise Dan ($5.80). Also, a regular DerbyWars player, he was rewarded with $2,000 for his handicapping prowess on Kentucky Derby day.

Flying G Racing, Murraybyrd, Mike_y and Chestnut rounded out the top six and earned $1,500, $700, $500 and $300, respectively.

The $10,000 event costs $115 to play, but players can qualify through satellite token games for just $15.

Turning $15 into $5,000 is quite the feat and it has already been accomplished many times by players at DerbyWars!

The co-feature DerbyWars horse racing contest event for the weekend was our $2,000 Oaks & Derby Survivor. It featured a stout test of eight races where 195 players were tasked with picking a horse to hit the board in each contest race. Miss one race and you are no longer in the game.

Only 2 players were able to make it to the end of this journey. Those players, Brnr and Jlunny, were able to parlay $12 into $1,000 after watching their picks finish in the money of the Kentucky Derby.

Unsurprisingly, the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby were the toughest tests of the day.

Brnr was able to survive the Oaks with third place finisher Unlimited Budget. Jlunny rode the speedy champion Beholder, who finished second beyond longshot winner Princess of Sylmar.

Then, they used Revolutionary and Orb, respectively, to close the deal in the Kentucky Derby.
The fun doesn’t stop there for DerbyWars contestants. Kentucky Derby 139 is in the books, but we are already raring to go for the Preakness! The feature event is the $10,000 Preakness Game with races from Pimlico, Belmont and Churchill Downs.

DerbyWars has daily cash tournaments, Head 2 Head games, Survivor tournaments and much more. Check it out today and claim 1,000 points for a free game!

The Kentucky Derby will be viewed through a very different lens by players of horse racing contests.

Unlike any other race all year, Kentucky Derby 2013 will offer exceptional value in the win pool. Fast horses will be double digit odds.

Below is our Kentucky Derby 2013 Contenders Top 5 list, but with a single caveat.

Only horses that project to be higher than 10-1 are included.

#1 Oxbow (Awesome Again x Tizamazing by Cee’s Tizzy): This guy is a close relative to last year’s late blooming Haskell Invitational winner, Paynter. Jockey Gary Stevens and trainer D Wayne Lukas hooked up to win the Kentucky Derby in 1995 with Thunder Gulch, so they have been down this road before.

The trainer and jockey tandem tried something new in the Arkansas Derby by taking Oxbow off the pace and it probably cost him him a better finish. He had nowhere to go in the stretch and probably didn’t like getting dirt in his face. Despite that, he started to finish up when he got some space. Draw a line through that race and look to the better form he showed in the Lecomte and Rebel Stakes.

#2 Vyjack (Into Mischief x Life Happened by Stravinsky): Undefeated until his last start, Vyjack could be forgotten by bettors on the first Saturday in May. Although it was a loss, his effort in the Wood Memorial was encouraging. He has shown the type of versatility in running style that we only see from very good horses. Garrett Gomez picks up the mount and the price on this Rudy Rodriguez charge figures to be generous. He could have all of us wondering why we ever doubted him when they cross the wire. Horse racing contest players can’t go wrong here if they find themselves needing a price horse.

#3 Palace Malice (Curlin x Palace Rumor by Royal Anthem): Horse racing contest players will know they have a horse that can get the distance if they pick this Todd Pletcher pupil. Most recently second in the Blue Grass Stakes, he has shown good form in other races such as the Risen Star Stakes where he was third. His sire won the Preakness Stakes, Dubai World Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic. The dam side boasts names like Juddmonte International winner Royal Anthem and prolific producer Red Ransom. Palace Malice will team up with Mike Smith for the Kentucky Derby.

#4 Overanalyze (Dixie Union x Unacloud by Unnacounted For): How can you go wrong with this type of horse? Yes, his Arkansas Derby win was slow. However, consider that he was wide the entire way and closed strongly to the wire. Jockey Rafael Bejarano said after the race that he saved something for next time. He ran well in the Iroquois Stakes under the Twin Spires last year and produced a ferocious effort to win the Remsen Stakes. Todd Pletcher and Rafael Bejarano are two of the biggest names in horse racing and will be one of the best price plays of the 2013 Kentucky Derby.

#5 Frac Daddy (Scat Daddy x Skipper’s Mate by Skip Away): The three-year-old campaign of this two-year-old star was stymied by set backs. He grabbed a quarter in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and was subsequently forced to miss some training. He failed to fire in the Florida Derby, but came back with a great effort in the Arkansas Derby to be second. He had the shadow roll off that day and appeared to finally be fit. Let’s not forget that he broke his maiden by almost 10 lengths at Churchill Downs and finished a very close second in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Don’t be shocked if he puts in the race of his life in the Run for the Roses.

Kevin De Vincenzi won our $10,000 SPIRAL STAKES GAME on March 23 with a score of $99.

Known online as “Kevind”, he attributes his success to handicapping and knowing the game.

“Do your homework and handicap. Many people do not; seize the edge.” Said De Vincenzi.

Scott Bowerman is a longtime player and fan of the innovative horse racing website DerbyWars.

“I cannot say enough praise about DerbyWars and its customer service. It is without a doubt, the best, period!” said Bowerman.

His username on the website is the same as his real-life racing stable, Flying G Racing. The syndicate tends to a small, but growing group of 30 partners. Bowerman is the GM.

Flying G Racing annexed the $25,000 FL/LA DERBY GAME on March 30. On a day when beating the favorite was a tough task, he racked up $72 to hold onto victory by a single dollar.

Justin Nicholson put together a stellar effort to win the $10,000 WOOD MEMORIAL/SA DERBY Game on April 6.

He scored big prices with Joelito, Emollient, but it was Swagger Jack who would be the crown jewel of his picks for the day on the way to a score of $119.80.

“I like to play surface switches because I can use my knowledge of pedigree to find price horses.” said Nicholson.

Like Bowerman, Nicholson runs a racing syndicate when he’s not playing at DerbyWars. Ninety North Racing Stable operates in the mid-Atlantic as well as Florida and New York.

Known as “justinnich” at DerbyWars, Nicholson lets value dictate the horses he chooses in our horse racing tournaments.

“You may not always pick the horse you think most likely to win, but you always want to pick one that has a decent shot at a price you’re willing to take.” said Nicholson

As a handicapper, one of the more compelling aspects of the Sport of Kings is the sheer number of moving parts. Not only does the player need to correctly identify those runners destined to put forth a great effort, but one must also survey the massive number of wagering options and attempt to maximize correct opinions. Keeping accurate statistics of my own play led me to primarily tackle horizontal wagering, as those bets yield the kind of success I was looking for versus other options. I’ve also found that Pick 3’s and Pick 4’s are essentially very enjoyable “mini-tournaments”.

With that said, the proliferation of handicapping tournaments in recent years is a benefit to the player, especially those that are already multi-race enthusiasts in their typical day to day betting. What makes handicapping compelling is the opportunity to invest a relatively small amount of money to win a relatively large amount. Tournaments accomplish this with a fixed entry fee, which is music to the ears of those wanting to manage money in a meaningful way. You can get several hours’ worth of entertainment and action with a known cost. Through any given race card, I often struggle with playing too many races and managing money in a poor fashion, so this is paramount.

Derby Wars is a unique site offering a plethora of games, with differing stakes, to suit the likes of most players. Building off the theme of laying out a little to get a lot, I enjoy entering low cost Derby Wars satellites for a chance to win seats in more expensive tournaments with a nice top prize. The interface is easy to use, the takeout rates are favorable, and the variety of games makes it a fun environment.

HANA is excited to partner with Derby Wars to sponsor a$10,000 tournament on April 13th, the last major weekend of Derby Prep races featuring the Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass Stakes. All too often, the negative aspects of the sport are highlighted, so this is a refreshing opportunity to really savor a great weekend of racing. The entry fee is $47 with a top prize of $2,500 and players down to 20th place will cash. Satellites are available on a regular basis, so please check out www.derbywars.com and join us for what promises to be a wonderful event amongst like-minded handicapping enthusiasts.

Survivor games task handicapping contest players with picking a horse in each contest race that will finish either first, second or third. Selections do not have to win, but only “hit the board” for handicappers to advance to the next race. Sounds easy, right?

DerbyWars Survivor games provide the best of both worlds. They are low risk and high reward.

That is a rare treat for players trying to grind out a profit at the racetrack.

There are a wide variety of options for players looking to try their luck in Survivor contests.

Early-Bird Survivor ($75 purse, $3 entry fee, 30 spots) consists of the first five races from the first two tracks we use on any given day. For example, it might use races 1-3 from Gulfstream Park and races 1-2 from Aqueduct.

Daily Survivor ($150 purse, $4 entry fee, 48 spots) typically runs with races 3-8 for the main tracks we use on any given day. For example, it may consist of races 3-8 from Keeneland. Then, later in the day we would use the corresponding PM track, such as Santa Anita Park.

Turbo Survivor ($100, $4 entry fee, 32 spots) this game usually runs near the end of the day and is comprised of two tracks, thus making the game move more quickly. Normally, this game will use PM tracks.

Graded Stakes Survivor ($800+, $9 entry fee, 110 spots) this game runs on the weekends and is composed of; you guessed it, graded stakes races. This is a fun game because it gives players a shot at making hundreds of dollars while risking just $9. Despite the large amount of entries, this game is very hard to survive until the end and often produces big payoffs.

Now that you know what Survivor games are and how they work, let’s check out some strategy from one of our top players.

In the month of March, Michael Ryan, better known as “Saulty Dawg” on DerbyWars, reeled in $1,200 in Survivor winnings. He did it while spending just a total of $63 on entry fees for those games. That means he got 19-1 on his money; that’s very good for any handicapping contest player!

Michael Ryan refers to himself as a “Weekend Warrior with a full time job”. He doesn’t have time to follow the races very closely, but has plenty of experience at the track to make up for that. He also knows when to rely on the experts.

“Once I’ve handicapped the race, I’ll listen to the track feed and hear what the local handicappers have to say. If they mention something I didn’t notice, I’ll go revisit my selections.” Ryan said.

“This past weekend, I struggled between three choices at Oaklawn when Frank Mirahmadi (track announcer) mentioned something that helped me settle on my selection. Two of us moved on while the rest of the field was eliminated.”

Ryan’s first big win of March came on 3/2 when he captured the $600 Graded Stakes Survivor. The six race contest saw him as the last man standing after just four races. He collected $500 for that win.

After that, he made it to the last race in the $600 Graded Stakes Survivor on March 9. Only one other player, Steven Nico (Scottsdad), was able to match him. They both took home $300 for their effort.

His last, and arguably most impressive win of March, came on 3/24. With just a single ticket, he made it all the way through the six race Graded Stakes Survivor contest. Once again, one other player, Bruce Meyer (Oracle), tied for the win. They both got $400. Not a bad return for having put up only $9 to play!

Saulty Dawg places a lot of emphasis on what the experts have to say about the handicapping tournament games he plays at DerbyWars.

“I put a lot of value on the paddock announcers who provide feedback on the ‘looks’ of the horse. Not being there, it’s hard to see who looks good and who doesn’t.” said the DerbyWars regular.

“Watch the post parades. If a horse looks bad, maybe another selection would make sense. The only other thing I would say about that is if you feel strongly about a horse; don’t come off it based on what you hear.” Saulty Dawg said.

For Ryan, playing multiple tickets has been pivotal to winning lots of cash. In the three Graded Stakes Survivor games that he won in March, he played the maximum allowed amount of tickets (3) in all but one game.

“I use multiple selections for coverage. If I feel strongly about a horse, I’d put all three of my tickets on the same horse, like with Verrazano this past weekend. Spread where you don’t feel so strong.” Ryan said

“Often, I’ll be on a favorite with most other players and find I’m rooting against the horse and for one of the other selections to hit the board. It seems to happen more often than not that a large chunk of the field gets eliminate in the first few races because a favorite failed to hit the board.” said Ryan

Having the coverage may keep you in the game and get you a lot closer to a win.” Ryan said.

Ryan had one final word of advice for DerbyWars players.

“Lastly, trust your handicapping.” Said Ryan.
