NHC Alumnus Tom Anderson Sweeps Weekend Contests at DerbyWars™, Aims for Vegas

It would be somewhat surprising if Tom Anderson got any sleep on the night of Friday, January 28, 2011. Anderson found himself the Day 1 leader of the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship after having picked seven winners to amass a bankroll of $182. Just one more good day of picking winners stood in the way of a $500,000 payday and Eclipse Award honors as champion handicapper of the year.

Though Anderson admitted to staying up late handicapping and arrived at his tournament seat at around 7am on Saturday morning, he would go on to finish third in that year’s NHC after a frustrating second tournament day. While the $100,000 consolation prize and $2,500 stipend for leading on Day 1 were nice, an appetite for greater NHC success lingers.

While Anderson has not been back to the NHC and has not yet qualified for the 2014 championship, he could very well be on his way after a banner weekend competing at DerbyWars.

Just days after DerbyWars announced a NHC Qualifier schedule, which will see an NHC seat offered each Saturday in August, the innovative digital handicapping contest platform offered the first pre-qualifying event for the August 3 DerbyWars NHC Qualifying Tournament. And just like nearly every other tournament offered over the weekend, the spoils were snatched up by Anderson. He became the first player to secure a spot in the August 3 DerbyWars NHC Qualifying Tournament, which will bring together a field of 11 punters to vie for one seat to next year’s NHC.

From the early stages of the prequalifier, there was hardly a doubt about Anderson’s victory. Playing with multiple entries under the handle “@yagli” he found himself well out in front of the field with not one but two contest entries heading into the final handful of races. With his winning ticket over $25 clear of his closest challenger, Anderson acknowledged it was mathematically possible to be caught in the final stages.

“I started to split my tickets to hold them off the last three races,” commented Anderson. “In front you can be a little more conservative. If I’m ever behind, I hedge with longshots.”

A win in the first NHC prequalifying tournament hosted on DerbyWars this year would be enough to make for a good weekend for any player. But for Anderson, it was just one of many victories enjoyed by the veteran handicapper. In fact, he earned another $100 for finishing second in that same prequalifying event.

Anderson also finished in a dead-heat for the win in Saturday’s $5,000 tournament, splitting the top prize with familiar foe @chiliking. The two each came away with $1,500 in cash. The Yagli fan also finished second in the Saturday $1,000 Belmont Park game, falling just $3 short of the winner while nearly $30 clear of the third place finish; he picked up an additional $250 for that effort. And to boot, Anderson picked up four $115 tokens and two $97 tokens in a variety of other contests.

“I like to sweep tokens,” Anderson slyly acknowledged.

Anderson began race-going with his grandfather in the 1960’s to tracks in Chicago, including Arlington Park, Hawthorne, Sportsman’s Park and Maywood.

Now a resident of Burnsville, MN, Anderson is a regular patron of Canterbury Park, which is where he qualified for his first and only trip to the NHC.

But perhaps not his last.
