$30K Game A Class Test For Horse and Player

Mom always said, “I’d be judged by the company I kept.” This quote made famous by President Kennedy was usually spouted during some teenage indiscretion, rule broken or moral dilemma. In the world of Thoroughbreds, trainers and owners constantly try to find the right company for their equine athletes – whether it be a bottom-level claiming event at a racino or the ultimate prize – a graded stakes race. In turn, handicappers or Big Game tournament players, must take company lines into consideration in judging which horse they think will either breakthrough at the new condition, out class others by dropping down into inferior company or simply holding form.

For today’s $30,000 Shootout at Derby Wars, I will base potential tournament choices on my perceptions of the horse’s class. I will look solely at the graded stakes on tap.

Grade II Commonwealth Stakes, 7 furlongs on Keenland’s polytrack

The first two entries, which also happen to fit my topic of class perfectly, could be instructive for today’s Big Game play. Breaking from the rail, five-year-old Comedero has found racing success the last two years running in high-level listed, but not graded stakes. While he shows a win in his last race, it was listed for Arkansas-breds like himself. While he has the rail and the current form, I am surprised at his 2-1 morning line simply based on who he has run against.

Listed at slightly lower odds, Right One, has run primarily in graded stakes company since
making his way from France last April. His top efforts include a grade III win at today’s distance and a neck defeat in the always competitive, Grade I Woodbine Mile. You’ll have to get over the five-month layoff and the fact most of the gelding’s success is on turf.

Finally, a long shot alternative Bergerac presents a case for the Big Game player taking a flyer on a horse jumping up in class. The five-year-old gelding has found most success in higher-level allowances with only periodic attempts at stakes company. What’s changed? Chad Brown has claimed Bergerac for $80K after he finished a half a length behind in a turf routing affair. This is a costly claim for a savvy trainer, who most likely had a graded stakes on his mind. Ignore him at your own risk.

Grade III Shakertown, 5 ½ furlongs on Keenland’s turf

Perfect Officer certainly belongs based upon his efforts last year running with the top of the turf sprinting class. A long layoff is negated with Tony Dutrow training.

Chamberlain Bridge is an owner’s dream – an eight-year-old gelding that continues to get paid at the stakes level. An 18-time winner and Breeder’s Cup Champ at 4-1 is a beautiful thing.

Grade I Blue Grass Stakes, 9 furlongs on Keenland’s polytrack

Look Hansen certainly belongs and his favorite status is warranted, but 6-5 in a 13-horse field, sorry he’s a pass in the Big Game.

Prospective certainly didn’t keep his company well in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile – finishing some 20 lengths behind Hansen on that day, but…he’s proven on the fake racing surface, exited the Juvenile with two stakes victory and runner up finish. He’s also 10-1 racing for the somewhat underrated Mark Casse, who does most of his training work north of the border.

$100K Northern Spur, 1 mile at Oaklawn

Drill belongs, but he’s likely using this race as a prep for the Preakness Stakes. Now a two-time graded stakes winner may just overpower this field on class alone. You get around even money to find out.

Pee H Dee looks to be the best fit – success at this level and attempts at graded company that didn’t pan out lead me to believe he’s right where he belongs. He also beat Z Rockstar in an allowance race; Z Rockstar then beat Explain, who has a lower morning line than Pee H Dee?????

Grade II Oaklawn Handicap, 9 furlongs at Oaklawn

Win Willy is a five-time winner at the track and a former Oaklawn Handicap winner. He belongs and is being overlooked and most likely will be under bet due to a poor start in his last.

Grade I Arkansas Derby, 9 furlongs at Oaklawn

Secret Circle’s class has been confirmed; his limitations are based on observers who feel he can’t get the distance based on breeding and how he was all out to win at 8 ½ furlongs. The Factor supposedly had the same limitations last year, and we know how that turned out.

Good luck in today’s $30,000 Shootout and finding your own class….

The First Prize winner takes home $10,000. Second prize is $5,000, and third is $2,500. Cash prizes pay down to 22nd place!

The $30K Shootout features 15 big races at Keeneland, Aqueduct and Oaklawn Park. Post time is at 3:30 p.m. ET for the card topped by the G1 Blue Grass Stakes and the G1 Arkansas Derby, the final two big preps for the Kentucky Derby. Test your handicapping prowess in the other big races of the day and talk some smack to your fellow players in the live game chat.

Buy-in for the $30K Shootout is $175, but the best way to get in the game is to play your way in. The last Super Satellite is Friday with 10 spots up for grabs, so don’t miss your chance to qualify for only $25!

DerbyWars mobile app now in Beta

Players have been asking for the DerbyWars mobile app, and it is now available in Beta at www.derbywars.com/mobile.

The app is for iPhone, Android and other smartphone devices.

We will be making several improvements to the app over the next several weeks, but we wanted to get the app out for players to use.   Currently, the app is in Beta, and recommended for experienced DerbyWars players at this point.

There are currently two known bugs/issues:

1) You will be unable to bet on an entry (1 & 1A, for example) if one of them is scratched.

2) The mobile app may not work for Blackberry users.

We look forward to making further improvements to the app and we look forward to your feedback!

Friday Recap – $1,000 Keeneland Contest

$1,000 Keeneland Game

Winner: Eric Moomey (Moomeyer – $69.20)

With Keeneland kicking off their spring meet today, we at DerbyWars decided what better way to start than an all Keeneland contest.  The $1,000 Tournament consisted of races two through ten with the headlining race being the Gr. III Transylvania Stakes.

Eric Moomey AKA Moomeyer proved to tough for the rest as he racked up $69.20 over the nine race contest; $20 more then the second place finisher.  Eric only hit three races but it was enough for the victory.  His largest strike on the day came on the shoulders of Dr. Diamonds Prize which paid $47.80 in the fourth race.  Eric took home $500 for his victory in today’s contest.

Something to take note of is that out of Eric’s last 11 contests, he has either won money or a token in seven out of those.  Talk about a hot streak!

Finding False Favorites In Saturday’s $10K HANA Game

Derby Wars is proud to introduce Tony Bada Bing, the man with the plan to help you grow as a tournament player! His first topic – finding false favorites in Saturday’s $10,000 Game sponsored by HANA.

By Tony Bada Bing

While I have been writing a blog over at Horse Racing Nation that ties into Derby Wars action here, today’s entry will be the first – inaugural – blog onsite. Why the wait, you may ask. The answer is far too technical and really does not matter.

What does matter is trying to help you find some right-priced winners, so hopefully, you, too, can cash at one of the most innovative and fun horse racing tournament sites. To this end, each week I will be concentrating on strategies that handicappers use to aid their pari-mutual wagers, which I think nicely translates to tournament-style play here at Derby Wars. The races I choose each week will somehow tie into this angle and again, hopefully, prove profitable.

In addition, I’m looking to generate some discussion amongst fans, followers and players. Add your two cents and tell me or another commenter what you think. Of course, be respectful of others while posting an opinion or don’t bother. Horseplayers require opinions, not the vitriol that sometimes goes along with them. Sure religion or politics may make for uncomfortable conversations around the Thanksgiving table, but as long as they consider the other’s point-of-view and respect that not everyone thinks alike, they can be made.

Moving on from the disclaimers, let’s get to today’s strategy: finding false favorites.

False favorites are those horses whose morning line – and likely race line – far out weigh their chances of winning. Thus, the horseplayer who can sniff out these likely over bet favorites will find himself other choices at much juicier prices. In playing Derby Wars “bullet style” games, which bankrolls only win-place payouts, exposing just one or two false favorites and correctly playing against them can be the difference between placing and also-ran status.

To illustrate today’s point, let’s look at the card for the $10K HANA Game. Race 6 at Aqueduct, a non-winners of one event at the one-turn mile gives us what I think are two false favorites in one felt swoop. Le Bernardin is a classic play against for one very important reason – he’s a maiden facing winners for the first time. This is likely the toughest assignment for any horse, well thought or not.

Le Bernardin is by Classic winner, Bernardini, owned by Darley Stable and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. With those connections this last out winner will probably be closer to 8-5. By the way, he was never contested in his merry-go-round win at six furlongs against just five other maidens. The distance and competition increase here.

Funny the other favorite in here – Macho Dorado – falls into an entirely different category, new guy in town. Either privately purchased or owners that decided to move east, Macho Dorado is a consistent sort, consistent in mid-level claimers running at or near the lead. But I guess, the new scenery, the new trainer and new rider were too much for the line maker, that and Macho Dorado’s six wins.

The biggest problem with the top two choices is their similar up front, on the pace running styles, which also conflicts with at least two others in here. If I am correct, some sort of speed duel, including the top two choices will ensue, opening the door for a stalker or closer.

Game Token is as salty as they come. A New York-bred who has run 40 times in three years and has won or placed 17 times. He also has two wins and two seconds racing at this 1-mile distance and two wins from five starts on Aqueduct’s main track. The recent form is solid and if the speed retreats at all, Game Token will overtake the front-runners in the stretch and pay mightily.

Other favorites who might be false on Saturday and deserve a play against in the $10,000 HANA Game:

Trinniberg, who races in the 7-furlong Bay Shore, is likely to bounce off his career best number at the always speed-favoring Gulfstream Park. Long shot alternative: Maan

Caleb’s Posse is as honest as they come, but I prefer not to take a closer in a sprint, especially in a sprint race devoid of early speed as is renewal of the Carter. Mid-priced alternative: Emcee may either steal this up front or pounce the quickest on whoever takes the lead.

Al Khali hasn’t seen the winner’s circle since September 2010 and while this a few notches below the stakes company he has held, Keenland’s money allowance has come up tough. There’s a host of others I’d take here, but I believe the best is Air Support who may have the greatest upside in his first start as a 4-year-old.

Stephanie’s Kitten leads a weak Ashland Stakes and I really can’t get behind coming off such a long layoff into a grade I race. Healthy alternative: Heart of Destiny, second off the layoff and who just missed against the top choice back in October at Keenland.

Good Luck in this weekend’s Big Game!

KSLAZE Scores $10,000 In Final Table, VERMONSTER Repeats!

Sunday: $15,000 two-day Contest

Winner: Kenny Salzman (Kslaze – $82.00)

Kenny Salzman also known as ‘Kslaze’ on DerbyWars bested a field of 84 players over the course of two days to take home a whopping $10,000 grand prize.  The contest started with 84 players on Saturday in which the top ten players were given seats to the final table on Sunday.  Ksalze ended up fourth on Saturday by totaling his winnings to $88.00.  On Sunday every player started at zero and went another 13 races to decide who would take home the $10K prize.

Kenny hit on five out of the thirteen races on the card including the final two in the 6th at SA and the 11th at FG.  Bodie Girl paid $16 in the 6th at SA while Triple Check paid $19.60 in the 11th at FG.  After the victory we just had to ask him how he ended up on these horses:

“My friend told me about a horse named Casino Host running on Sunday.  He told me he was going to run big and he did at 10-1.  Another horse I had was Bodie Girl who I thought was the only speed in the race and she went wire to wire.  In the last race the horse that won (Triple Check) just lost to a horse that ran second to Casino Host earlier in a Grade 2 and I couldn’t believe he was 6-1”

These last two strikes were the final nails in the coffin so to speak as Kenny cemented his victory.  Also worth mentioning is that Kslaze signed up on DerbyWars three days prior to taking home the big $10,000 prize. Could you be the next?

Sunday: Championship Game (Final Table)

Winner: John Esterbrook (Vermonster – $48.80)

Well, the Vermonster has done it again!  Not only did John Esterbrook take down DerbyWars $25,000 Game on March 10th but he also lasted the first ever March Madness Tourney.  John qualified for the final table by being in the top half of finishers in each of the previous five rounds.  This past Sunday Vermonster was joined by Kevin Jones AKA ‘Younique’ for a 15 race showdown in which the winner took home $900.  We were anticipating a great game and there was no disappointment on the players’ behalf.   The contest was decided by $2.80 in which Vermonster ended the game with $48.80 and Younique ended with $46.00.

John only hit three races out of the fifteen in the contest to walk away the March Madness Champ.  His largest score on the day came in the 9th race at FG when Casino Host paid $37.00 for the win-place format.  Over the course of the tourney John tallied up $1,400 and a $175 token.  When Vermosnter was asked about his thoughts about the tourney he replied:

“The format of this tournament appealed to me because the top 50% advanced each time, so I felt like there was some margin for error, especially in the early rounds. I also thought it was an opportunity to get more reps as I try to improve my tournament skills. As it turned out, I got six competitions for that initial $50 buy-in.  I just think Derby Wars is a great way to sharpen my handicapping and tournament ability. It’s nice to have many so different buy-in levels and formats to do that.”

You heard it here folks, more play for less pay!!!

Saturday – Sunday: $1,000 Graded Stakes Survivor

Winner: Steven Okpych (Suffolk OTB – 7 wins)

With all the great stakes races that were offered around the country this past weekend  we at DerbyWars took it upon ourselves to give our players a little treat; a winner take-all $1,000 Survivor Contest.  Races such as the Florida and Louisiana Derby’s were the premier races featured in this contest.  After the first day of competition only 13 players remained out of the 134 that started.  It only took seven out of the eight races listed to crown a winner and when all the smoke had cleared Steve Okpych (Suffolk OTB) was the last one standing.
The seventh race in the contest was the Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds and as Casino Host, Papaw Bodie and Joinem crossed the finish the ten players that entered that race was downsized to one; Steve Okpych.  Steve used Papaw Bodie as his final selection.  This Survivor Contest was the largest payout DerbyWars had ever offered, nice job Suffolk OTB!!
